Coimbatore farmers urged to reduce chemical fertiliser use and adopt organic alternatives for soil health

1 source

Agricultural officials in Coimbatore district have advised farmers to cut back on chemical fertilisers and increase use of biofertilisers and biopesticides as part of a government soil preservation initiative. The recommendation addresses soil degradation caused by excessive nitrogen use and nutrient imbalances from over-reliance on chemical inputs. The shift aims to maintain long-term soil productivity and environmental sustainability in the region.

The Department of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare in Coimbatore district has launched an initiative encouraging farmers to reduce chemical fertiliser use and adopt biofertilisers and biopesticides to preserve soil health. District officials, including Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar and Joint Director of Agriculture M. Tamilselvi, addressed farmers at a programme in Annur block, emphasising the importance of soil health cards and balanced fertiliser usage. The initiative, part of the central government's 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan' (Save the Field) movement, recognises that continuous cultivation combined with excessive nitrogenous fertilisers and declining organic manure use has caused nutrient imbalances and soil degradation. Officials noted that erosion of soil quality is particularly high in Annur, Sulur and Sultanpet blocks, where excessive urea application has elevated nitrogen content. Farmers are being encouraged to conduct soil testing to understand nutrient levels and deficiencies, with officials promising detailed reports to guide cultivation practices.
