The Tambaram City Municipal Corporation Council has passed a resolution to rename a 15-kilometre road connecting East Tambaram and Velachery after Major Mukund Varadharajan, an Ashoka Chakra awardee killed in a 2014 counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir. The renaming follows a process initiated by the Director of Municipal Administration in August 2025, with state government approval granted in October 2025. The tribute recognises Varadharajan's local ties to the Tambaram area and his posthumous receipt of India's highest peacetime gallantry award.

The Tambaram City Municipal Corporation Council has formally resolved to rename the Velachery-Tambaram High Road as 'Major Mukund Varadharajan Road' in honour of the late army officer who was killed during a counter-terrorism operation while on deputation to the 4th Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles in Jammu and Kashmir in 2014. Varadharajan was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award. The renaming process began in August 2025 when the Director of Municipal Administration wrote to the Tambaram Council with the proposal, and the Tamil Nadu state government granted formal permission to proceed on October 23, 2025. The road, stretching approximately 15 kilometres, was chosen in part because of Varadharajan's personal connection to the area — he completed his college education at Madras Christian College in Tambaram. A senior municipal official indicated the name change is expected to take effect within a few weeks. Varadharajan's story gained wider public recognition through the acclaimed Tamil film 'Amaran,' which depicted his life and sacrifice.
