The Tambaram City Municipal Corporation Council has passed a resolution to rename the Velachery-Tambaram High Road after Major Mukund Varadharajan, a soldier killed during a counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir in April 2014. Varadharajan, a native of Tamil Nadu who studied at Madras Christian College in Tambaram, was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra — India's highest peacetime gallantry award — in August 2014. The Tambaram City Municipal Corporation Council has formally passed a resolution to rename the approximately 15-kilometre Velachery-Tambaram High Road as 'Major Mukund Varadharajan Road' in Chennai. The process began in August 2025 when the Director of Municipal Administration wrote to the Tambaram Council proposing the rename, and the Tamil Nadu state government granted formal permission on October 23, 2025. Major Varadharajan was killed in action in April 2014 while on deputation to the 4th Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles during a counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir, and was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra later that year. He had strong ties to the Tambaram locality, having completed his college education at Madras Christian College there. A senior Tambaram City Municipal Corporation official indicated the name change is expected to take effect within a few weeks. Public awareness of Varadharajan's story was significantly boosted by the Sivakarthikeyan-starrer Tamil film 'Amaran,' released in October 2024.
