Chennai Port to Build Multi-Level Car Parking Facility to Boost Automobile Exports

Chennai Port Authority plans to construct a multi-level car parking facility within port premises at an estimated cost of Rs 400 crore to accommodate growing automobile export demand. The port currently exports one car every 80 seconds and exported over 204,000 units in FY 2025-26, but existing parking space can only hold 4,000-4,500 cars against a needed capacity of 8,000. The project aims to consolidate scattered parking locations, reduce logistics challenges, and support major manufacturers like Hyundai and Kia operating from the Sriperumbudur automotive cluster.
Chennai Port Authority is moving forward with plans to build a multi-level car parking facility to address space constraints limiting automobile export capacity. The port currently manages parking across multiple scattered locations totaling 59,675 square meters, accommodating only 4,000-4,500 vehicles, while demand requires capacity for 8,000 cars. With one car exported every 80 seconds and 204,165 units exported in FY 2025-26, the port serves as a key export gateway for major manufacturers including Hyundai Motor India Limited and Kia India. The Rs 400 crore project will consolidate parking in a single location, reducing internal driving distances to the Ro-Ro terminal and improving logistics efficiency. Officials have issued a Request for Proposal to hire a consultant for preparing a Detailed Project Report, with the consultant expected to be finalized within three months and the DPR completed within another three months. Following approval from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, bids will be floated for project execution.
