California Police Officer Shot by Fellow Officer During 'Horseplay' Incident in Parking Garage

Dashcam footage released by the Pasadena Police Department shows two uniformed officers standing near the open trunk of a police SUV in the department's parking garage at 240 Ramona Street when a patrol car approaches around 6:18 p.m. One of the standing officers draws his handgun in a quick-draw motion and points it directly at the approaching vehicle before reholstering it; seconds later, the dashcam jolts, a cloud of dust appears, and the same officer grabs his left shoulder and crouches in pain as colleagues rush to his aid. Police Chief Gene Harris said the officer in the patrol car drew his own weapon and it discharged, sending a round through the windshield and into the standing officer's left shoulder. The wounded officer sustained serious injuries but has since recovered and remains employed with the department, while the shooting officer, Roy Alatorre, has been separated from the city following an internal administrative investigation. Harris delayed releasing the video for nearly nine months — well beyond California's standard 45-day requirement — by invoking a statutory exception to protect the integrity of the investigation. The case has been referred to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for criminal review, though the DA's office told the Los Angeles Times it had not yet received the report as of Thursday.
