Australian Court of Appeal Dismisses Paedophile Ashley Paul Griffith's Sentence Reduction Appeal
Ashley Paul Griffith, a former childcare worker serving a life sentence for hundreds of child sex offences, has failed in his appeal to reduce his 27-year non-parole period. Griffith pleaded guilty to over 300 offences against dozens of young children at childcare centres in Queensland and Italy between 2003 and 2022. The Court of Appeal's decision upholds one of Australia's most severe sentences for child sexual abuse, with Griffith now eligible for parole consideration in 2049.
The Queensland Court of Appeal on Friday dismissed an appeal by Ashley Paul Griffith, a 48-year-old former childcare worker, to reduce his non-parole period from 27 years. Griffith is serving a life sentence after pleading guilty to 307 child sex offences against 65 victims aged one to nine, with the offending spanning nearly two decades across Queensland childcare centres and facilities in Italy. His defence argued the 27-year non-parole period was manifestly excessive and disproportionate to similar cases, citing his full cooperation with authorities and guilty plea that spared victims from testifying. Prosecutors countered that the sentence barely reflected the scale and cruelty of the crimes, noting Griffith had filmed nearly all victims and accumulated over 4,000 abuse images and videos that he shared online. Justice David Boddice delivered the brief decision refusing the appeal, with one victim and her family present in court. With time already served, Griffith can apply for release in 2049, and he faces additional proceedings in New South Wales for 180 alleged sex offences against more than 20 children.

India's Foreign Minister Defends Russian Oil Purchases, Cites US Encouragement and European Weapon Sales to India's Adversaries
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar defended India's purchases of Russian oil, stating that the United States itself encouraged India to buy Russian crude in 2022 to stabilize global oil markets following sanctions on Moscow. He also pushed back against European criticism by pointing out that European-made weapons have been used against India for years, while no Indian weapons have been used against European nations. Jaishankar's remarks highlight India's position that its energy and foreign policy decisions are driven by national interest and economic considerations rather than geopolitical alignment.
