Asylum seeker convicted of rape in Nottinghamshire park sentenced to 10 years

Sheraz Malik, a 28-year-old asylum seeker, was sentenced to 10 years in custody plus four years on extended licence after being convicted of raping an 18-year-old woman in a Nottinghamshire park in June last year. The victim had been drinking with a friend when she was assaulted by Malik and another unidentified man in an isolated area of Sutton Lawn park. The case highlights serious criminal offences and the vulnerability of intoxicated individuals in public spaces.
Sheraz Malik was convicted by a jury at Birmingham Crown Court in January of two counts of rape and sentenced on Thursday. The attack occurred on 29 June in Sutton Lawn park in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, when the victim, who was intoxicated, was taken to an isolated part of the park by one of a group of men she had just met. The victim's male friend had asked Malik and his associates to watch over her while he went to meet another friend. Malik claimed the sexual contact was consensual, but the jury rejected this defence. A second man involved in the assault has not been identified or apprehended. Malik received a 10-year custodial sentence with an additional four years on extended licence.
