Anthropic Releases Claude Fable 5, First Public Version of Mythos-Class AI Model
Anthropic on Tuesday launched Claude Fable 5, the first publicly available model from its powerful Mythos class, alongside a restricted upgrade called Claude Mythos 5 for vetted partners. The release comes two months after Mythos debuted privately through Project Glasswing due to concerns that its advanced cybersecurity and biology capabilities could be exploited by bad actors. Fable 5 uses the same underlying model as Mythos 5 but routes sensitive queries in cybersecurity, biology, chemistry, and AI distillation to the older Claude Opus 4.8, making broad release possible while limiting the most dangerous capabilities.
Anthropic released Claude Fable 5 on Tuesday, marking the first time a Mythos-class AI model has been made available to the general public, including enterprise customers and paid subscribers. The model shares its underlying architecture with Claude Mythos 5, which is simultaneously being rolled out to a limited group of vetted cybersecurity partners and select biology researchers through Project Glasswing in collaboration with the U.S. government. To enable the public release, Anthropic implemented classifier-based safeguards that automatically reroute queries related to cybersecurity, biology, chemistry, and attempts to distill the model for competing AI systems to the less capable Claude Opus 4.8, with users notified when this occurs. Anthropic says these safeguards trigger in fewer than 5% of sessions, and more than 1,000 hours of external red-team testing found no universal jailbreaks. The company also introduced a new 30-day data retention policy for all Mythos-class model traffic, including for enterprise customers who previously had zero-retention agreements, citing the need to detect multi-request attack patterns — a move that has already prompted Microsoft to limit employee use pending legal review. Fable 5 is priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, double the cost of Opus 4.8 but less than half the price of Mythos Preview, and is available at no extra cost to Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise subscribers until June 22, after which usage credits will be required. The launch comes days after Anthropic confidentially filed its IPO prospectus with the SEC, with the company reporting a $47 billion revenue run rate and a $965 billion valuation, and coincides with rival OpenAI also filing confidentially for its IPO.
