Anthropic India Claims Separate Legal Status in Trademark Dispute with Local Startup

Anthropic India Private Limited argued in court that it is a distinct legal entity separate from its U.S. parent company Anthropic PBC in a trademark infringement case filed by Belagavi-based Anthropic Softwares Private Limited. The Indian startup claims prior rights to the Anthropic trademark, having been incorporated in 2017 before Anthropic PBC's 2021 founding, and seeks a temporary injunction. The case highlights jurisdictional and corporate structure questions in cross-border trademark disputes.
In a hearing before the Principal District and Commercial Court in Belagavi on June 9, 2026, Anthropic India Private Limited (AIPL) submitted legal arguments asserting its status as a separate Indian entity distinct from U.S.-based Anthropic PBC. The company contended that allegations in the trademark infringement suit filed by local startup Anthropic Softwares Private Limited (ASPL) were directed solely at Anthropic PBC and that AIPL had no legal or operational nexus warranting its inclusion in the proceedings. ASPL, incorporated in 2017, claims prior use of the Anthropic trademark and alleges that Anthropic PBC—incorporated in California in 2021—infringed on its established brand identity. ASPL has sought a temporary injunction based on its prior market presence in the Indian IT sector. AIPL dismissed allegations that it promotes or advances Anthropic PBC's commercial interests in India as "baseless and speculative." The court adjourned the matter to July 6, with procedural delays noted in serving summons on the U.S.-based entity.
