Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei Has Only One Direct Report

In recent interviews, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has outlined a highly unconventional leadership structure in which he maintains just one direct report — his chief of staff — while the rest of the executive team reports to President and co-founder Daniela Amodei, who oversees day-to-day operations. Amodei described the arrangement as 'incredibly freeing,' allowing him to concentrate on strategy, research direction, and long-term thinking rather than personnel management. By contrast, OpenAI's Sam Altman reportedly has around half a dozen direct reports, and Nvidia's Jensen Huang has many dozens. Beyond organizational structure, Amodei says culture maintenance consumes a significant share of his working hours, estimating he dedicates 30–40% of his time to keeping Anthropic's roughly 2,500 employees aligned on the company's mission. He holds biweekly all-hands meetings called 'DVQ' (Dario Vision Quest), during which he presents multi-page documents covering topics from product strategy to geopolitics, and maintains an active Slack presence to communicate candidly with staff. Amodei emphasized a commitment to transparency and avoiding corporate jargon, a philosophy that draws comparisons to Ray Dalio's 'radical transparency' model, even as Anthropic faces intensifying competitive pressure and has recently revised its Responsible Scaling Policy.
