Andhra Pradesh Government Accelerates Power Infrastructure Upgrades for Hospitals and Data Centers
Andhra Pradesh's Energy Minister has ordered fast-track completion of power substations across the state to address supply interruptions and low-voltage issues, with special focus on ensuring continuous power to government hospitals. The government is also developing a comprehensive power transmission roadmap to support the rapidly expanding data center ecosystem in Visakhapatnam, which is attracting major global technology companies. The dual initiative aims to strengthen grid reliability for critical services while positioning the region as a hub for hyperscale data centers and AI infrastructure.
Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar has directed officials to expedite substation construction and implement underground cabling systems for critical sectors, with particular emphasis on uninterrupted power supply to approximately 30 major government hospitals. The government plans to establish alternative power arrangements during disruptions and improve generator performance to prevent outages affecting patient care. Simultaneously, Special Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand announced a future-ready transmission roadmap designed to support data center expansion in Visakhapatnam, which has emerged as a preferred destination for companies like Google, Reliance, and TCS. The plan includes development of 765kV, 400kV, and 220kV transmission networks connecting key substations, with capacity to support over 15 GW of data center load by 2034. Currently, 16 major data center projects are under development in the region, capable of generating approximately 9.10 GW of IT power load, with total demand projected to reach nearly 15 GW by FY 2036–37.
