Air Canada Captain Charged with Flying 900+ Flights Without Required License Over 16 Years

Geoffrey Wall, a 59-year-old former Air Canada pilot from Barrie, Ontario, faces seven criminal charges — including fraud over $5,000, two counts of uttering forged documents, three counts of possession of a counterfeit mark, and public mischief — after investigators allege he captained Boeing 767, 777, and 787 aircraft on more than 900 flights without ever obtaining the Airline Transport Pilot License required for the captain role. Wall joined Air Canada in 1998 and was promoted to captain in 2009, a position that mandates an ATPL under Canadian aviation regulations, but police say he instead presented forged credentials to both his employer and Transport Canada for the duration of his captaincy. The alleged fraud was uncovered in March 2025 during a routine credential evaluation at Toronto Pearson International Airport, where anomalies in his license documentation were flagged; Air Canada then voluntarily reported the matter to Transport Canada, which launched a regulatory investigation before Peel Regional Police initiated the criminal probe. Wall earned approximately C$3 million during his time as captain and is alleged to have also filed a false police report claiming his pilot documentation had been stolen, an incident investigators say did not occur. Air Canada maintains that passenger safety was never compromised because all pilots undergo mandatory competency training every six months and an annual flight check with a certified Transport Canada check-pilot, and an internal audit found no other instances of non-compliance; however, aviation experts and police noted that the case exposes significant weaknesses in license verification and regulatory oversight. Wall, who retired from Air Canada in early 2025 and subsequently worked part-time at Georgian College, is scheduled to appear in court in Brampton on June 29.
